A Collaborative Performance Residency

FIELD CHORUS is a choreographer-led performance residency in which a small group of participants enters a real creative process — and emerges from it having performed original work for a live audience.

Over 10 studio sessions spanning September to November, choreographer Patricia Woltmann guides the group through the full arc of making: from first movement impulse to public showing. The work that is created belongs to the process, shaped by everyone in the room.

The residency works with material we bring from our everyday lives — objects, images, the ordinary made strange. Together,something neither could make alone.

Before the word, there was the body. So much of what we carry – what we feel, what we know, what we long to share – slips through the cracks of language. We reach for words and find them insufficient. Yet the body has always known another way.

Dance is not a language in the strict sense – it doesn’t have grammar, it doesn’t translate – and yet it speaks. Directly. Bodily. To something in us that recognizes itself in motion. This is the territory we enter together.

Togetherness.
What binds us and makes us part of a community? Whether in private life, within a family, a self-chosen circle, or a group brought together by chance, how can shared experiences and journeys be fully lived and shaped together?

Collective Composition (improvisation) is about creating in the moment – together. We explore how individual impulses can connect, overlap, and form a shared dance language. The workshop offers space to tune into your own body, to listen, and to playfully build compositions in real time with others. The score we work with investigates both the mundane and the strange: fragments of everyday actions and continual re-compositions of new situations. By refining our individual and collective sense of space, time, and behavior, we ask: how do we communicate while collectively composing movement?

Listening. Action. Negotiation. Listening. Reflection. Shifting. Variation. Listening. Modification.

Where is verbal language needed, and where is it not? How can mutual agreements be made through the body – non-verbally – and when through spoken words?

My video works arc, dissolve and (dis)appear will be presented as part of the Wiesenburg Sommerfest.ival 2026 — a diverse programme of performances, dance, installations, film and concerts hosted at the Tanzhalle & Werkhalle Wiesenburg in Berlin-Wedding.

The three video works, developed during artist residencies at AADK Spain / Centro Negra (2024–2025) at the former salt extraction site Salinas del Curro in southern Spain, will be presented in a loop screening alongside works by other artists.

A Cooperation with PalaisPopulaire by Deutsche Bank

In Motion: The Balance Between the Individual and the Collective

How can a small movement extend beyond one’s own body?
How do individual decisions influence a group – and vice versa?
 What holds people together?

As part of the film series OnView – Power, this workshop series invites participants into a shared choreographic research process. Starting from the individual body, the collective is explored as a social construct. At the centre is moving together – between freedom and safety, between solidarity and self-assertion, as well as between acceptance and resistance. We will explore how community emerges through proximity, distance and spatial relationships, and how movement creates resonance. Through simple choreographic scores, improvisation and embodied listening we will develop individual and collective compositions in real time. The workshop series is conceived as an ongoing process. The choreographic outcomes developed during the workshops will be presented in a public sharing on April 12th – the final Sunday of the film program. The workshops are led by choreographers Patricia Woltmann and Viviana Defazio.

Patricia Woltmann is a choreographer and performance artist working at the intersection of dance, performance, video and somatic practice. Her participatory works explore fragile relationships between bodies, landscapes and social structures, as well as themes of perception, ecology and collective behavior.
Viviana Defazio is a stage dancer and choreographer. Her dance practice, intertwined with her experience as a Shiatsu practitioner, focuses on dialogue, mutual listening and transformation. In her work, she uses touch, deep listening and visualization to understand different perspectives.

Participation Requirements
For people with some dance experience and/or curiosity about body awareness. 
Commitment to attend at least three workshop dates is required.

It’s time to reconnect. With yourself, with others, and with space – together. In this group setting, you will re-claim and re-experience space through movement – whether in a studio or public space, indoors or outdoors.  Through guided improvisations and movement scores we explore the contrasts and qualities of closeness and distance. Each session begins with a warm-up that combines elements of yoga, Klein technique, and release-based work. Through dance-technical and improvisational approaches, the basic principles of force/weight, time and space are individually experienced and learned. We will try out movement tasks together – to music or in silence – which evolve into playful compositions.

In this class, we explore dance as a way to deepen self-awareness, release stress and connect with others. Re-Collect  invites us to let go of tension, rediscover both inner and outer spaces of movement, and perceive the body in a new way – with more sensitivity, clarity, and strength. Re-Collect is also an invitation to a collective rest – a shared space where we can slow down, replenish our energy, and draw new strength. The focus is on the individual and collective experience of dance and movement. Through floor work, partner exercises and improvisation, a space is created for mutual encounter, play, and expression. We use somatic impulses, touch, weight, and gravity to arrive in the body, connect with it, and rediscover its intuitive wisdom.

Precarious Terrains presents recent video works by Berlin-based artist and choreographer Patricia Woltmann, who investigates the shifting relationship between body, environment and belonging. Developed during residencies at AADK Spain in 2024 and 2025, the works were filmed at the former salt extraction site, Salinas del Curro in Valle de Ricote, Spain. They trace cycles of emergence and disappearance, erosion and renewal – reflecting on how human presence and natural forces shape vulnerable terrains. The evening includes a screening, a live intervention and an artist talk with open conversation.

We are bodies. Bodies speak directly. In this workshop, we explore spaces in between – a meeting zone – together, directly from the moment. Together will re-appropriate the space in movement – whether in the studio or in the surrounding public space, indoors or outdoors. Each day ends with a cool-down and longer relaxation. If the weather is good, we may also use the surrounding (green) urban space in Neukölln in addition to the studio space.

From dance to gardens, from the art of the nap to the tea ceremony, from photography to ceramics, from film to hypnosis, Catherine Contour transforms experiences into objects or ‘rituals’ that suggest a shift towards fantasy and the imaginary. Her creations, in a variety of formats, suggest ways of living in which choreographic figures and ways of being together can unfold, intensifying our presence in the world.

The movements are immediate and often based on sensory input and collaborative dynamics. Each participant can experiment, find their own movement language and feel liveliness.

Can we translate our daily, mundane life, how we connect, listen and
relate to each other into a creative process through movement?
As opposed to the idea of economical optimisation, dance works with
what is in the moment.
Looking at both the mundane and the odd, fractions of everyday actions,
continual compositions of new situations arise.

Allowing for connection: Moving through and into space

For Professional Dancers
In this training we learn to apply our intuitive knowledge.
A fundamental aspect is the use of breath with focus on the spine in
relation to gravity. Aiming for awareness and connection to one ́s inner
body, the class starts with the focal point of grounding, using exercises from
Klein Technique and Yoga. As movement evolves in more complex patterns,
participants explore the interplay between the qualities of time/weight/flow and
elasticity in the body.
We allow for a buoyant transmission of movement into outer space.
This class can facilitate a space for individual vision, play and collective experience.

Workshop

9^th October 2016

This research workshop examines the connection between dancing and writing.
We will dance and write, using what comes into mind, heart and body.
We will playfully explore the idea of “language” through movement and text.
Write your own words like a rough sketch, a single word etc. and dance it.
Search and find your own voice. Both verbal/written language and movement are
fundamental forms of expression.
Movement, the body, and text communicate in different ways, sometimes they
directly influence each other, sometimes they differ from each other.
With curiosity and humour we try out together various ways of
communication, whilst enjoying the moment of dancing.
We can discover how meaning is made and changed, from sense to non-sense
to sense..
